Silver gelatin print – a definition
Silver gelatin print definition
- Silver Gelatin Print
- A silver gelatin print is a black and white photographic print where silver salts are suspended in a layer of gelatin, layered on to a fibre base paper, to record a picture projected on to the paper.
After projection, a sequence of chemicals are used to make the projected image visible (development) and then permanent (fixing).
A silver gelatin print is capable of receiving a variety of different treatments, both during development and after fixing, which can alter the printed image. This assists a printer or photographer to reach a personal rendition of the photographed subject. Silver gelatin prints are used for fine−art print presentation. The silver gelatin print is different to a resin coated print; the differences may be discussed in a future article.
